This is then reinforced by the electronic synthesizers with long high notes.Īlthough the beat is electronically produced, it’s as if the drum beat has been ‘humanized’ meaning that the hits do not fall exactly on the beat, creating a more realistic and sympathetic environment for the other parts. It is clear from the start that the accompaniment is severely built on the foundation of the grand piano which plays single, low root notes in the left hand while the right hand plays the more noticeable block chords with slight adaptations. A major key simply wouldn’t suit the lyrics or even the title of the song so the small detail of the key actually plays a huge part in expressing the intended message which Jhene Aiko is trying to send to us. The minor key explains the passionate, almost depressed demeanour of the song. In my opinion musically, the structure of the accompaniment is quite simple, which in turn almost shines a spot light on the melody line. You could say that this was a clever way of putting together the song as it allows listener to focus in a little bit more on the singer. The vocal line can be described as the stand out theme of the song, as the entire song is more or less based around that particular theme. The melody is sang by the vocalist, Jhene Aiko, and is then accompanied by block chords and long root notes played by the synthesizer.
